Accredited Legal Operations Professional (ALOP)

The True Value Partnering Institute’s Accredited Legal Operations Professional (ALOP) designation is the Institute's legal operations qualification. Professionals who qualify for the ALOP are expected to have a deep understanding and possess relevant work experience in core areas and competencies as they relate to legal operations in the law firm or corporate legal department environment, such as:

  • Strategic Planning and Alignment

  • Leadership and Change Management

  • Knowledge and understanding of the legal industry landscape

  • Knowledge and understanding of underlying functional/departmental operations and related competencies (financial, human resource management, business development, marketing, records management, technology/information governance, vendor/OC management, data analytics, litigation support, knowledge management, etc.)  

  • Knowledge and understanding of law firm or corporate legal department systems, processes, procedures and best practices.

  • Knowledge and understanding of innovative practices and roles in law firms and law departments(pricing, project management, artificial intelligence, alternative staffing, etc.)

Qualification Criteria:

Those currently employed as a law firm or law department operations professional (with at least 60% of daily time/job responsibility dedicated to operations) who meet the following criteria may qualify for the ALOP:

7+ years legal operations experience at the Manager level OR

3+ years heading operations within a law firm or law department at the Chief or Director Level (or equivalent)

 AND

 32 Educational Credits

Educational credit equivalencies are approved by the True Value Partnering Institute as follows:

Area of Education

2 credits per cohort (maximum 8 hours)

Core Legal Operations Coursework/Training

1 credit per hour (see limitations below)

Operations Focused Conferences or Roundtables

1 credit per hour (maximum 8 hours)

Undergraduate Degree in Business (any business degree, i.e. accounting, finance, economics, statistics, marketing)

3 credits

Masters in Business Administration

3 credits

The following is a representative listing of approved educational and other credit-granting activities:

Core Legal Operations Training (up to a maximum of 24 credits/hours for all core coursework/training)

  • George Washington University Law Firm Management Program - up to a maximum of 16 credits/hours

  • Stony Brook Executive MBA for Law Firm Managers – up to a maximum of 16 credits/hours

  • Harvard Law School "Leadership in Law Firms" Program – up to a maximum of 16 credits/hours

  • Harvard Law School "Leadership in Corporate Counsel" Program - up to a maximum of 16 credit/hours

  • Law Firm Administrator or Law Department Operations "Boot" Camps and Equivalents - up to a maximum of 8 credits/hours

Law Firm Administration or Law Department Management-Focused Conferences or Roundtables (up to a maximum of 8 total credits/hours for all conferences and roundtables):

  • Law Firm Candidates:  Association of Legal Administrators (ALA), International Legal Technology Association (ILTA), Legal Marketing Association (LMA), True Value Partnering Institute (TVPI)

  • Law Department Candidates:  Buying Legal, Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC), ACC Legal Operation

Public Speaking and Publications:

  • 2 credits per approved speaking engagement or publication - up to a maximum of 4 credits

In special circumstances, the ALOP may be awarded to an individual whose combined qualifications significantly exceed the spirit of the above requirements but may not meet a specific educational or experience requirement.
